Horror Dance

After much anticipation on Friday 13th December 2013 the Middle School reward event Horror Dance took place. This dance was organised to reward students from the Blaze and Fortis sub-school for their attitude, behaviour and effort throughout 2013. Attendance was by invitation only.

Miss Panikoula and her devilish team worked very hard for weeks and especially on the day to transform the gym into  suitably scary venue complete with tombstones, skeletons and spiderwebs.

A number of staff, many virtually unrecognisable in their costumes, dressed appropriately to supervise the spooky evening. Did you spot Mrs Potterton, Mr Gardener and Mr Galati? Check the photos!

Pizza, soft drinks and lollies were provided for the party-goers.

Prize winners for the evening were:
Best Costume: Liam

Door Prize: Daniel Masterson,

Best Dancer: Ani Te Rangi and Chloe Austin

Thank you Miss P and your team for organising a great night. Those of you who did not attend missed a great evening.

Learn to Live Semester 2 2013 - Week 8

This week the Year 9 Learn to Live Class have been making sponge cakes as part of their assessment task for this programme. It was an interesting set of classes with some unique approaches to the practicalities of cake making. Actually reading a recipe properly - or maybe at all - would be a great staring point. Despite this the results were all rather impressive and as Carys Gee, Casja Davies and Chloe-Lee Short can confirm, rather yummy.

10 pin bowling 28th August 2013

On the 28th August 9 Fortis Flyers -  students from our gold and silver academic achievers from Semester 1 - accompanied by Mrs Harrison Ismay joined Miss Panikoula and her group of Blaze high achievers for a fun afternoon 10 pin bowling at the local bowling alley. With some friendly rivalry and varying degrees of skill [expertise?] and some very interesting techniques - two handed, through the legs, throw the ball as hard as we can, roll gently... it was game on :)
With the incentive of a TED point for every strike scored bowlers tried to score that elusive all pins down with the first ball. Weilin, Shania and Ashlee all managed to score 1 apiece and Weilin scored the highest score to be the Fortis champ for this round. We look forward to a return competition when the semester 2 awards are presented.

It was a lovely afternoon and all the students were a credit to the school and themselves. Thank you for a lovely afternoon.

WAMSE Testing Tuesday 6th and Wednesday 7th August 2013

Next Tuesday all our Year 9 students will be sitting their Western Australian Monitoring Standards in Education tests in Science and Society & Environment in our gymnasium. There will be two tests each day with two Science tests on Tuesday starting at 8.30am and two Society and Environment tests on Wednesday also starting at 8.30am. On both days the tests will be finished by recess and students will return to their normal timetabled classes from period 3 until the end of the day. The best preparation for the tests is for students to read over their notes in Science and S&E, to get a good night’s sleep prior to each of the days and to eat a good, nutritious breakfast on the two days of the test. We will be providing toast outside the gym from about 8.10am to make sure everyone gets a chance to eat a good breakfast. Students do not need to bring anything to the test as we will be providing pencils, erasers and all paper required. They will need to bring their normal equipment for Periods 3 to 5. Rockingham SHS and all of its staff would like to wish our Year 9 students all the very best for the 2013 WAMSE assessments and I’d like to once again thank parents for their support of their students’ learning in our school. Term 3

Welcome back to Term 3 - halfway through year 9 already. It is shaping up to be another busy term with many things happening the most notable being WAMSE testing which will take place in week 3 and Yr 9 exams at the end of the term.

A reminder that, as the cooler, wintery weather is upon us, that all students are expected to be in correct school uniform every day. This is either the designated RSHS uniform available in the school uniform shop or plain black bottoms, a school shirt and a plain black top with no logos or patterns blazened across them. Footwear should be closed in and appropriate for school. Leggings, Thongs, coloured sweatshirts etc are not suitable and should not be worn.

Date for your diary: The TED Reward excursion will take place on Wednesday 11 September 2013. Get your points in the box in the Sub-School and keep looking at the leaderboard, blog and Edmodo to see where you stand on the ladder. Dont forget you can also will the individual awards for achieving 5,10,20,50 and 100 TED points over the year. Who will be the Fortis TED point champion for 2013?

Monsters University Reward Excursion

Congratulations to  25 of the top TED point Fortis students for term 2 who participated in the Movie Reward Excursion to see Monsters University today. I hope you enjoyed the movie. As always the majority of you behaved perfectly and were great Ambassadors for the school. Sadly there were a few who did not behave in an appropriate manner and as a result we may have to reconsider whether the movies is a suitable reward activity for term 3.

How TED works

There is a little confusion as to how TED points work. So here is a [very] brief explanation.

TED [Treat Everyone Decently] points are the reward system used at RSHS. Staff award TED points as a reward for "doing the right thing' both in and out of the classroom. Good behaviour, staying on track, a thoughtful gesture, completing a difficult task - all the things that are used to determine your ABE's [Attitude, Behaviour and Effort] are acknowledged by giving you a TED point. You then put the points you have earned into the collection box in your sub-school to be counted at the next tally. . The points are totalled on a two week cycle and the highest point winners for that cycle are listed on the subschool Fortis leader-board.
At the end of the term the top 30 TED winners for that term are invited to participate in a reward excursion or activity.

But there is more....

The points accumulate throughout the year and as you reach milestones there is a reward.
When you achieve 5 points you get a certificate, at 10 points you receive a $5 canteen voucher, 20 points - you are invited to a TED lunch [this happens once a term], at 50 points you earn a movie ticket and at 100 points there is a "mystery reward". Something to aim for!!

At the end of it all is the TED Point Champion for the year awarded to the student who has gained the most TED Points throughout the year.

But beware.....

We know that the majority of our students are wonderful but occasionally there is a small hic-cup when things do not quite go according to plan...... You get a "letter of concern "sent home or you lose your good standing. If this happens you will receive a penalty of 2 point deduction for every letter of concern and 5 points for loss of good standing.  If you are suspended for any reason you are not allowed to participate in any reward activities for that term and your name will not feature of the leader-board until you have regained your good standing. However, a letter of commendation will gain you bonus points.

Hopefully that makes thing's a little clearer but if you are still unsure just ask Mrs H-I or Mr Galati and they will explain it to you.

The Fortis Flyer Soars Again

In 2012 as the year 8, soon to be christened Fortis, coordinator I wanted to create an archive of events and highlights of the students journey through Rockingham Senior High School in the form of a termly newsletter. The Fortis Flyer was born. Unfortunately after three editions, which generally ended up strewn around the school, it became a time consuming labour of love with no real value at the end of it and despite my intentions and attempts to revive it the Flyer has somewhat crashed.

Over a similar time frame I have been learning more and more about creating a digital presence and began to think of how this could be incorporated into reviving the Fortis Flyer as a paperless, digital 21st century resource and so The Fortis Flyer is going to become a blog, updated on a regular basis as things happen rather than once a term and linked to the school website so that parents, friends and family can see the great things that the Fortis Students are involved in. It can be accessed as a link from the RSHS website and will, over time, become a record of the journey of the Fortis Sub-school.
